Florida Association of Child Life Professionals Conference 2015 Debrief

FACLP 2015 or Florida Association of Child Life Professionals is a wrap! We had a blast and gained a ton of new child life knowledge. We have to give a hand to Wolfson Children's hospital for having a large amount of quality speakers and always presenting some of the newest innovations in child life!

This year the conference was held in Jacksonville, Florida, next year this conference and the National Child Life conference will be combined and held in Orlando. The dates are May 19-22, 2016!

First things first, Caroline and I spent a night at Amelia Island on Ferdinadina Beach. We enjoyed the sand, waves, sun and fun. Then we headed to Jacksonville, to check in and get ready to learn!

Keynote:
The keynote speaker was Pegine. Check out more about her and her business here. She taught on the importance of celebrating YOU! She was so full of energy that you did not even need a cup of coffee that morning (... or maybe you did anyways, like me!) She said to get on the #SOULtrain
S: Sense and Celebrate your accomplishments
O: Opportunities abound to Grow & Nurture your Confidence
U: Understand your Power and Potential
L: Love Yourself
*Be the Soul of your Hospital*

Here are some notes from the workshops we attended.

Palliative Care:
This workshop was a panel presentation by Community PedsCare out of Jacksonville, FL. Check out there website here. "Community PedsCare is a national-award-winning pediatric palliative and hospice program for children with life-threatening conditions." They have two CCLS employed. Typical services for the CCLS at PedsCare are:

  • Home visits (1-2 hours)
  • Planned therapeutic interventions
  • Serve birth to 21 years
  • Sibling and Parent support
  • Medical Play
  • Therapeutic Recreation Activity modifications
  • School visits
  • Bereavements and legacy building
  • Transition prep from peds to adult care
  • Co-treating with interdisciplinary team

PANDA Project:
Reducing Pain and Anxiety during Medical Procedures
This workshop was a panel presentation from the creators and main supporters of the PANDA Project at Wolfson Children's Hospital. Does your hospital have a pain management plan?

Autism:
One of our favorite sessions during the conference. It was so hands on and interactive. I can't wait to implement some of their ideas into my routine. (Lucy was a great patient)

Behavioral Health:
Behavioral health is a new area that some child life programs are starting to get involved in, this was presented by child life specialists at Wolfson Children's Hospital. So wonderful to see the field of child life making its way into new areas.

One Person Program:
While I am a two person program, only one of us is here at a time so I feel as if I am a one person program. This session was so helpful and inspiring. This session was full of great tips on starting up a program, getting donations despite being a for profit hospital and working through the push back from staff members.

Internship:
Remember we presented at this conference?! ;) This was our session, all about the process and pressures of applying for internships. Check out more information regarding applying for internships here.

CLC: The closing speaker was the new executive director/CEO of the Child Life Council, Mr. Jim Gandolf. It was so encouraging to have him come all the way to Jacksonville to visit and meet with us. I (Caroline) had a very encouraging conversation with him, and I am looking forward to him and the CLC assisting me with research for my thesis coming up.

We met so many of you, and had so many networking opportunities.
If we met you, and asked you to write up a blog post we meant it, we would love to share your stories!

Can't wait for the national conference in 2016! Hope to see even more of you there!
