Camp Blue Skies

Through the years, I have volunteered with many organizations, charities, foundations, camps, etc. But one of them has stolen my heart.

Camp Blue Skies: "Enhancing the lives of adults with developmental disabilities through recreation, socialization and life skills education."

Camp Blue Skies rents out existing camp facilities during their off seasons and offers a 4 night, 5 day camp experience to adults with developmental disabilities. This is their 5th year hosting camps, and the foundation only continues to grow.
Founder, Dick Sesler and his son, Brent
Beginning in Boomer, NC at Camp Harrison, each year Camp Blue Skies hosts two different sessions of camp in NC. In 2011, they piloted a camp in Rutledge, GA at Camp Twin Lakes! This year they piloted a camp in Ohio at Recreation Unlimited! I attended the Georgia camp in March of 2011, 2012, 2013, and I will be back there in two weeks for 2015! Sydney went in 2013! This past October, I got the opportunity to volunteer with the North Carolina camp!

For those of you who live within driving distance of any of these camps, I promise you it is 100% worth the drive! The Camp Blue Skies staff and team are some of the most encouraging and awesome people I know! The volunteers are top notch, and I have been able to build lasting relationships with many of them. And last, but certainly not least, the campers are the most inspiring people you will ever meet. I promise you, you will not leave camp the same. I even have an entire honors thesis paper to prove the impact camp has on the lives of college students!

To find out more about how you can get involved, go to their website:

The videos below are from their website. The first one is an informative and inspiring video telling you more about camp! Watch closely and see if you can find me on it! Hint: I actually talk in it!
The music in the background of the video is The World's Greatest. If you come to camp, you will truly understand the importance of this song. We truly are the World's Greatest.

This next video is a news clip feature some campers from Camp Blue Skies! I promise you it is worth the watch!

As I mentioned earlier, I will be back at Camp Blue Skies in two weeks, and I can hardly contain my excitement.

Have you ever volunteered with this population? Is there a camp like this near you? What questions do you have about Camp Blue Skies?

I want to hear from YOU!

I have got to say that working/volunteering with Camp Blue Skies (CBS) has been one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Being surrounded by this population has been a blessing each and every time I have had the opportunity to be a part of their wonderful camp. The staff, volunteers, and campers are such a great group of individuals who share a great friendship and relationship with each other and thus the atmosphere of the camp is always fun, exciting, and joyful. I am excited to be volunteering for my 1st time at the Georgia Camp in less that 2 weeks!
